Aromatherapy massage is a form of alternative medicine that uses natural plant materials (also known as essential oils) and other aromatic compounds for the purpose of positively enhancing or altering a person’s mind, mood, cognitive function and/or physical health.
The nostrils are attached to the brain’s ‘Limbic System’, which controls the body’s nervous system, emotions and hormones. When a person inhales the aroma from the essential oils, signals are then sent to the Limbic System. These can then positively affect a variety of both physical and psychological elements of a person’s body, including heart rate, the immune system, blood pressure and stress levels.
In aromatherapy massage, these essential oils are added to massage oils or lotions. Specific oils are used and often combined by the massage therapist to help alleviate the problem, dependent on the client’s needs.
